Wuuluman sheep producers take action against lice

08 Nov 2010

Sheep producers in the Wuuluman area north east of Wellington have formed an action group to develop coordinated strategies for managing and eradicating sheep lice.

The Wuuluman lice control group will be driven by the producers themselves, with Central West LHPA vets acting as facilitators.

Greg McCann, Central West LHPA senior district vet, says the formation of the group is a positive step forward in managing this important livestock health issue.

"Sheep lice have a significant impact in terms of treatment costs and lost production, so it’s pleasing to see producers taking action and working together.

"The group’s initial meeting was well attended and there is good local support for work in this area.

"Based on discussions at their initial meeting, one of the group’s goals will be to achieve lice free status within two years," he said.

John Holland has been elected as the group’s chairman. Mr Holland is a director on the Central West LHPA board.

"The property boundaries for the lice control group are now being determined. Once they are settled, letters will be sent to all interested parties to determine what the group sees as being the issues of importance.

"The LHPA will assist the group where possible, providing facilitation for presentations and field days amongst other things.

"I’d encourage producers in other parts of the Central West LHPA to consider the development of similar lice control groups," Mr McCann said.

For more information or assistance with lice, please contact your local LHPA district vet.
