Wild dog meeting for North Coast LHPA

18 Mar 2010

Landholders and community members in the North Coast Livestock Health and Pest Authority wanting to know more about wild dog control in their area are encouraged to attend an upcoming wild dog meeting in Mullumbimby.

With increasing reports of wild dog sightings and attacks on livestock, domestic animals and native fauna across the northern rivers region, the North Coast LHPA is holding a public meeting for anyone seeking more information on controlling wild dogs.

To be held at Mullumbimby Ex-Services Club on Tuesday 30 March at 6pm, speakers include rangers from the North Coast LHPA, a pest management officer from National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), and rangers from Byron and Tweed councils.

Brian McInnes, general manager of the North Coast LHPA, says the meeting is a proactive step by the LHPA to inform landholders of their options for controlling wild dogs and help coordinate group baiting programs.

"This meeting will enable all members of the community, not just those on the land, to find out how they can work together with the LHPA, their local council and the NPWS in combating the wild dog problem," Mr McInnes said.

"Information will be provided at the meeting to outline all the important factors that landholders need to consider when undertaking wild dog control, such as methods, timing, location and implementation.

"Another important factor when carrying out control is working with your neighbours, and this meeting will allow landholders to learn more about group baiting programs in their area."

Topics to be covered at the meeting include wild dog management plans in the North Coast LHPA, current wild dog issues in the region and baiting programs, NPWS baiting programs, the Companion Animals Act and dog owners’ responsibilities, and related animal health and welfare issues.

Following the speakers’ presentations, attendees at the meeting will have the opportunity to ask questions of the speakers and discuss key issues further in an open forum. The meeting will finish at 8pm.
