Wet summer leads to worm problems
Veterinarians from the Riverina Livestock Health and Pest Authority are urging sheep producers to implement integrated drenching strategies to prevent infestations of worms.
Gabe Morrice, Riverina LHPA district veterinarian based in Narrandera, says farmers need to be vigilant with their worm control programs for sheep following the wet conditions experienced in summer.
"Many farmers have undertaken minimal drenching over the past ten years whilst we have been experiencing drought conditions," Mrs Morrice said.
"This year with the milder, wet summer, conditions have been ideal for both scour worms and barber’s pole worm survival and infection of sheep.
"This has resulted in a number of problems being observed in sheep and lambs, including weight loss, scouring (predisposing sheep to breech strike) and in some cases, deaths."
Samples sent to the EMAI veterinary laboratory from affected sheep and lambs around the district have revealed worm egg counts that are much higher than normal and often at a critical level.
"Worm control is best done with integrated management, not just drenching," said Mrs Morrice.
Producers concerned about their sheep or requiring further advice should contact their veterinary adviser or the district veterinarian at their local LHPA.
