Technology assists feral pig control
Rangers with the Lachlan Livestock Health and Pest Authority have reported success utilising remote surveillance cameras in a program aimed at reducing feral pigs in the Trundle area.
Lachlan LHPA rangers Wendy Gill and Kristy Saul, based in Forbes and Condobolin respectively, worked closely with a group of landholders in the Trundle area recently to collaboratively tackle the pest.
"Landholders were reporting an increasing number of feral pigs throughout the Trundle area which had prompted them to take action," Ms Gill said.
"Six landholders formed a group and together with Kristy we developed a collaborative program.
"As this was the first program of its type for the area we looked at best possible target control options, including baiting options, and how new technology such as remote surveillance cameras could be used.
"We set up two remote cameras at free feeding stations to allow for monitoring of feral pig activity.
"The footage captured was of excellent quality and allowed us to ascertain roughly how many feral pigs were in the area, the number and size of the mobs and the individual sizes of the pigs, which helped with targeting control measures.
"There were 25 feral pigs destroyed through the program, which will reduce damage to farming enterprises and the environment in the area.
"The success of the program was largely due to the group’s cooperation and participation."
The Lachlan LHPA now has 10 remote cameras for use in pest control programs. If you are interested in becoming involved in a pest control program in your area contact your local LHPA office.
The Lachlan LHPA also runs 1080/Pindone baiting course accreditation for landholders who wish to purchase 1080 or Pindone bait products for pest control. The authority would like to run a course in the Trundle area, if numbers warrant. Contact the Forbes office on 6852 1688 for more information and to register your interest in the course.
