Sheep lice info meetings in Cowra and Young

11 Jun 2010

Landholders looking for advice and assistance in controlling sheep lice in their flocks will benefit from attending one of the upcoming sheep lice information meetings in Cowra and Young.

To be held in Cowra on 23 June and Young on 29 June, the meetings will provide landholders with practical and up-to-date information on lice control, including on-farm biosecurity, avoiding chemical resistance and a refresher talk on plunge dipping.

Senior district vet for the Lachlan Livestock Health and Pest Authority, Eliz Braddon says the meetings are a great opportunity for landholders to learn more about all their lice control options.

"As well talking through chemical control options and best practice application methods, we will be discussing the importance of good management and biosecurity in keeping your flock free of lice," Ms Braddon said.

"Our speakers will also be providing a local update on worms, as well as information on the new NLIS Sheep and Goats."

There will be several demonstration stations set up for landholders to get more specific product information, with representatives from Coopers, Bayer and Elanco and a demonstration of the new lice detection kit.

Topics to be covered at the meetings include:

• Back to basics – a review of the lice cycle to stop it in its tracks
• Lice – the cost of production and market losses
• Resistance / chemical applications – the latest updates
• Control options – regulation / neighbours / biosecurity
• Bringing back the plunge – refresher on what is required
• What about the worms – local update and current conditions
• NLIS sheep and goats – where are we and what’s next

The Cowra meeting will be held at the Cowra Research Station on Binni Creek Road, while the Young meeting will be held at Peter and Jim Parkman’s property “Orizaba”, Murringo Road.

Both meetings will run from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Morning tea and a barbecue lunch will be provided.
Participants should RSVP by 18 June (for Cowra) or 25 June (for Young) by phoning the Young office of the Lachlan LHPA on 6382 1255.

The events are organised by the Lachlan LHPA and Industry & Investment NSW.
