Record stock movements on NLIS database

02 Sep 2010

The North Coast Livestock Health and Pest Authority is reminding all livestock producers to record stock movements in the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) database, following a fine recently being issued to a local producer for failure to comply with the system.

The $550 penalty notice was issued to a cattle producer in Murwillumbah who repeatedly failed to notify the NLIS database of property to property stock movements – an offence under the Stock Disease Act 1923.
North Coast LHPA senior district vet, Matt Ball says it is the responsibility of the receiver of cattle and sheep to update movements to the NLIS database within seven days of the movement.

"All movements of cattle, sheep and goats between properties with different property identification codes (PICs) must be recorded on the national database," Dr Ball said.

"Arrangements can be made for this to be done by the vendor or consignee but it is ultimately the receiver’s responsibility. Many producers have database accounts to do these transfers, while other producers employ a third party."

Dr Ball says he hopes this case will act as a reminder to all producers of their obligations under the NLIS.
"Australia’s livestock tracing system is essential for maintaining markets for livestock products and for response to emergency disease, as it allows livestock to be traced from paddock to processing," Dr Ball said.

"NLIS requirements have been in place since 2005 for cattle moving between properties and this year new requirements have started for sheep and goats being moved between properties."

NLIS is a livestock traceability system designed to protect and grow Australia’s international reputation as a high quality supplier of animals and animal products.

Livestock Health and Pest Authorities and Industry and Investment NSW form the regulatory framework for the system in NSW.
