Prepare now as Riverina locust hatchings increase

13 Oct 2010

Following a rapid increase in reported locust hatchings, rangers in the Riverina Livestock Health and Pest Authority are asking landholders to remain vigilant and prepare for ground control.

Over 450 reports of hatching locusts have been received from all parts of the authority district.

Riverina LHPA senior ranger, Peter O’Shannassy said it’s likely this is the start of the main hatch period across the district.

"The number of reports received so far exceeds the total number of locusts present in autumn."

"We are very pleased with the response from landholders in their reporting efforts," he said.

By contacting your local LHPA ranger, chemical can be made available for the treatment of bands on properties where locusts have been confirmed.

Mr O’Shannassy reminded landholders that the optimum time for ground chemical control was two weeks after they hatch, during the banding stage.

"Control operations are also increasing and we are very pleased with the efforts landholders are making to comply with the criteria and label conditions," Mr O’Shannassy said.

To report locust activity on your property, contact your local LHPA office. Landholders can assist further by taking note of the size of hatching area and providing good directions to the location.
