Practical sheep lice information at field day

14 Jul 2010

Landholders looking for assistance and advice on controlling sheep lice will benefit from attending the upcoming Sheep Lice Field Day in Binalong.

To be held on Thursday 29 July, the field day will provide landholders with practical and up-to-date information on lice control, including what chemicals are available and when to use them, how to avoid insecticide resistance and best management practices.

Tablelands Livestock Health and Pest Authority district vet, Jim McDonald says the field day is a great opportunity for landholders to learn more about all their lice control options.

"The field day will include demonstrations of chemical application methods, including Paul Gentles’ cage dipping machine, Will Daley’s nine metre plunge dip and several different backliners," Mr McDonald said.

"As well as highlighting new chemicals and new application methods, we will be discussing the importance of good management and biosecurity in keeping your flock free of lice, particularly inspecting and isolating new stock and working together with your neighbours."

Topics to be covered include:

  • Sheep lice life cycle
  • Production losses from lice infestations
  • Lice control – more than just chemicals
  • What chemicals are available and when to use them
  • Insecticide resistance – lessons to be learned
  • Neighbour relationships – putting good will into practice
  • Regulation – what is the current policy

The field day will be held at the new “Illalong” woolshed, Burley Griffin Way, Binalong – access is via the Bookham-Binalong Road.

Participants should register by 23 July by phoning the Yass office of the Tablelands LHPA on 6226 1155.

The event is organised by the Tablelands LHPA, Industry & Investment NSW and Landmark Copeland Medway.
