New pig baiting project in Central West LHPA

23 Dec 2009

A new widespread feral pig baiting program in the Central West Livestock Health and Pest Authority is set to benefit landholders by reducing the pig population.

The Central West LHPA is working with landholders around Coonamble to reduce the rising pig numbers, which are attracting illegal hunters to private properties in the area.

Central West LHPA ranger in Coonamble, Emma McIntyre says that the extensive baiting program across the region will assist landholders with pests as well as unwanted visitors.

"We had a relatively good season here during winter and spring, which saw the feral pig population increase. Now things are drying off so the pigs are moving further onto people's properties in search of food and water," Ms McIntyre said.

"Because the pigs are in higher numbers and a lot more visible, we're now seeing problems with hunters in the area.

"They’re taking liberties and chasing pigs where they shouldn't be, and damaging and cutting a lot of fences which puts landholders and their stock at risk."

Ms McIntyre says landholders are encouraged to participate in baiting programs by contacting their local LHPA office.

"If landholders are having problems with feral animals, they should get in touch with their local ranger for assistance in eradicating the pests," Ms McIntyre said.

"To report any illegal hunting, landholders should contact their local police."

Coonamble cattle grazier, Neil Kennedy has encountered problems with illegal hunters on his properties and says he is pleased with the steps the LHPA is taking to control feral pigs.

"I’ve had my fences cut by pig hunters on several occasions recently, as have many of my neighbours," Mr Kennedy said.

"We’re all very supportive of this extensive baiting program by the local LHPA which will greatly reduce pig numbers as well as illegal pig hunting in the area."
