Mice on the move in Riverina

18 Feb 2011

The Riverina Livestock Health and Pest Authority is advising producers to check their properties, in particularly rice and other summer crops, for mouse damage.

Peter O’Shannassy, Riverina LHPA senior ranger, said that they have been receiving an increasing number of requests for assistance in combating rising mice numbers.

"The rangers have been out and about assessing the situation and found that Griffith, Hay, Jerilderie, Deniliquin and Moulamein are the current hot spots for mice," Mr O’Shannassy said.

"Rice crops seem to be a prime target at the moment and we urge landholders to check their crops for damage.

"Numerous holes found in irrigation banks are generally an indication mice are active."

Mr O’Shannassy said that with the improvement in seasonal conditions and the abundance of food supplies in the form of grain from unharvested crops, it is anticipated mice will breed up in the area given the current numbers.

"Now that we’re getting reports, I’d strongly suggest landholders check for evidence of mice on their properties and obtain the necessary baits to undertake control activities," he said.

"Local rangers can assist landholders by providing advice and preparing bait to control mice in a number of areas.

"If we get on top of mice numbers now we may prevent further damage to crops down the track."

Landholders who require advice regarding mouse control should contact their local office of the LHPA.
