Learn the latest in nutrition at beef and sheep field days

28 Jul 2010

All cattle and sheep producers keen to improve stock nutrition will benefit from attending the upcoming beef and sheep field days at the EH Graham Centre for Agricultural Innovation.

The Annual Graham Centre Beef Field Day is to be held on the 19 August, while the Inaugural Graham Centre Sheep Field Day will be held on the following day 20 August, both at the Wagga Wagga campus of Charles Sturt University.

The programs for both days include several short presentations in the morning on key topics producers regularly deal with, followed by three workshops of o ne hour each in the afternoon.

Hume LHPA district vet Tony Morton says that both field days will provide a wealth of practical, useful information to producers in the region.

"At the beef field day, industry experts will cover topics including minerals and trace elements, forage cops for hay and silage, poisonous plants, supplementary feeding, and nutrition and dystocia in heifers," Dr Morton said.

"While at the sheep field day, the speakers will cover topics including feeding ewes and reproduction, optimal lambing time and climate change, pregnancy toxaemia, feedlot and rumen acidosis, and the economics of feeding.

"These are all important areas of livestock nutrition faced by producers and the information provided will be tailored to ensure it has practical applications. The workshops will provide an opportunity for more hands-on learning and discussion."

Workshops will be run following the presentations. Workshop topics at the beef field day include silage conservation; the basics of nutrition; and the economics of feeding. Sheep workshops will cover feeding ewes and reproduction; drought feeding/GrazFeed; and a hands-on condition and fat score workshop.

Registration is essential for the workshops and places are limited. The workshops will run three times so participants can join all workshops if interested. Lunch will be provided to workshop participants only.

To register for the workshops, please fill out the registration form at www.csu.edu.au/research/grahamcentre or email bfd@csu.edu.au with your full details (including names and numbers of workshop participants). A small fee of $10 per person will be charged to workshop participants.

The EH Graham Centre for Agricultural Innovation is a collaborative alliance between Charles Sturt University and Industry & Investment NSW.
