Large scale aerial baiting targets wild dogs
The largest pest animal control program in the state is now underway with the Livestock Health and Pest Authorities carrying out intensive aerial wild dog baiting from Maitland to the Queensland border along the Great Dividing Range.
Coordinated by the New England, Mid Coast and Central North Livestock Health and Pest Authorities, the annual aerial wild dog baiting program brings together 37 wild dog associations, the National Parks and Wildlife Service and Forests NSW.
New England LHPA ranger, Brian Ferris says that despite some unplanned setbacks, the initial stage of the baiting program has been a success.
"The annual aerial wild dog baiting program is undertaken in two stages, with the first section covering a large area from Maitland to Glen Innes," Mr Ferris said.
"Despite bad weather and RAAF fighter plane training causing delays to our baiting schedule, the helicopters were eventually able to drop the prepared meat baits along the strategic baiting lines."
The second part of the program – baiting from Glen Innes to the Queensland border – was postponed due to the initial delays but is planned to begin on 1 July.
Aerial baiting programs like this are one of the most effective ways to reduce the impact of wild dogs, as they can be carried out across large areas and all types of terrain, particularly those that are remote and inaccessible.
The authorities will follow up the aerial baiting with ground baiting, trapping and shooting activities.
Mr Ferris says that a huge amount of planning goes into the aerial baiting program to ensure it is effective.
"LHPA rangers work with the numerous wild dog associations to carefully prepare maps of their baiting lines and submit applications for strategic aerial baiting to the Minister for Primary Industries," Mr Ferris said.
"Planning meetings with all parties are held to determine the best time for baiting to take place, with LHPA rangers finalising the itinerary to ensure the program is carried out smoothly."
