Producers advised to remain vigilant on footrot

21 Feb 2011

Vets from the Central North Livestock Health and Pest Authority are reminding sheep producers to remain vigilant and monitor their flocks for footrot amid concern that the disease may reappear.

Footrot is a contagious bacterial disease of sheep and goats. In its virulent form the disease causes severe pain to the affected animal and results in significant economic losses.

Bob McKinnon, Central North LHPA senior district vet, says that while recent seasonal conditions have been welcomed, they have also resulted in increased livestock health challenges for sheep producers, including the risk that footrot may re-emerge.

"The Central North LHPA has successfully maintained its Protected Area status (flock prevalence of less than 1 per cent) since the State was declared a Footrot Protected Area in August 2009," said Dr McKinnon.

"This is a credit to all sheep producers in the Central North LHPA district, as they have remained vigilant in monitoring and reporting any cases.

"In light of improved seasonal conditions and the increased footrot challenge, we ask that producers continue to monitor their flocks for signs of footrot, so early recognition, containment and eradication can occur if needed.

"Most importantly, maintaining the low prevalence level is a huge boost to the welfare of sheep in the district, which also has flow on effects including production efficiencies."

Sheep farmers are urged to remain vigilant, only buying sheep accompanied by an owner/vendor declaration for footrot, such as the National Sheep Health Statement.
