Fines for motorbikes on TSRs

24 Nov 2009

On the spot fines may be issued to motorcycle riders caught riding on Travelling Stock Reserves (TSRs).

Under clause 26 of the Rural Lands Protection Regulation, recreational motorcycle riding is not an authorised activity on TSRs.

Hume LHPA general manager John Knight said that trail bike riding on TSRs is a major problem within the authority.

"It causes damage to equipment that has to be repaired using ratepayer funds, it can frighten stock on the TSR and it can damage some environmentally sensitive areas," Mr Knight said.

LHPA rangers are authorised to issue infringement notices to people who misuse a TSR.

In Wagga Wagga court a person was recently fined $2650 plus $380 in court costs for riding a motorcycle on a TSR. The case was prosecuted by the local Rural Crime Unit.

Mr Knight said that many of the TSRs in the Hume LHPA are environmentally sensitive areas with animals, birds and plants on the endangered list.

"Regeneration of native vegetation is a key priority on TSRs, with many rare native grass species growing in the reserves, so it is vital that we minimise any damage to these areas," Mr Knight said.

A number of the Hume TSRs also adjoin family farms, and LHPA staff often receive calls from farm residents about unauthorised use of TSRs and rubbish left in the area.

Activities not allowed on TSRs include the removal of soil or plant life, and the recreational use of motorised vehicles such as trail biking and off road four-wheel driving.

Walking, swimming, fishing, horse riding and pedal cycling are all permitted recreational activities on TSRs.

For more information on using a particular TSR contact your local LHPA office.
