Eurobodalla Rabbit Management Plan signed off

03 Feb 2011

The South East Livestock Health and Pest Authority has taken a proactive approach to the coordinated management and control of rabbits with local landholders.

Andrew Miners, ranger with the South East LHPA, is pleased to report that after months of consultation the Eurobodalla Rabbit Management Plan has been signed off by all stakeholders.

"The rabbit management plan intends to deliver a nil tenure, co-ordinated and proactive approach to the wild rabbits that inhabit the Eurobodalla region," he said.

"This is one of a number of pest projects being undertaken by the South East LHPA, as we focus on group control programs to reduce pest populations and their impacts on agricultural production and the environment."

Mr Miners says that although the plan was signed off in late 2010, it has been operational since August 2010.

"We have already coordinated several rabbit control campaigns which are being implemented by the working group in areas such as Congo, South Durras and Mystery Bay to name a few," said Mr Miners.

"Although the plan is in its infancy, the working group is well established and performing to deliver positive campaigns to reduce the local rabbit population."

According to Mr Miners the landscape that the working group is focusing on has a complex rabbit population as the majority of the rabbits are in urban and semi urban areas.

"We have had some success in these areas but unfortunately it will always be limited as we cannot access all the places we need to. The upside is that now we are working together and we can better manage these complex situations and provide an improved control effort across the landscape."
