Central West LHPA assists flood affected landholders

22 Dec 2010

Rangers and vets from the Central West Livestock Health and Pest Authority have been at the forefront in managing the local flood response for livestock related issues.

The recent rain across NSW has wreaked havoc on many local landholders, particularly those situated along the Macquarie and Castlereagh Rivers.

Central West LHPA (acting) senior ranger, Rhett Robinson says they have received over 240 requests for assistance from local landholders and responded to all livestock issues.

"Flood management is being coordinated through the Dubbo and Coonamble offices, with 5 fulltime staff seconded to assist with the floods," he said.

"The LHPA has coordinated the activities of three helicopters, contracted by Industry and Investment NSW. They have been used for surveillance and fodder drops for livestock, assisting with movement of livestock onto dry land, shifting essential vehicles and motorbikes, and dropping off essential agricultural and veterinary chemicals."

Further surveillance will be undertaken over the next couple of days as the floodwaters recede.

"This will provide a clear picture of the extent of the damage. In the meantime, the LHPA will continue to provide assistance to those landholders affected by the floods," Mr Robinson said.

"TSRs are available to all Central West LHPA landholders at no cost and fenced in reserves for reduced costs until the end of February. Landholders affected by floods will be given priority use of these reserves while their country recovers."

Mr Robinson also advised landholders to continue checking their stock for several weeks following the floods, in order to detect early onset of diseases associated with floods, and to contact their local LHPA vet for assistance with diagnosis and treatment options.
