About the elections

Why are director elections being held now?

General elections for directors of the former Rural Lands Protection Boards were held in 2006.

As a consequence of the implementation of the recommendations of the IMC external review into the former RLPB system, former RLPBs were wound up on 31 December 2008 and replaced on 1 January by Livestock Health and Pest Authorities.

An interim board of directors for each Livestock Health and Pest Authority was put in place until such time as general elections could be held.

Will elections be held in every LHPA district?

Where more than the required number of directors is nominated for a particular division in an LHPA, a ballot will be conducted.

How many directors will be elected in each authority?

Six of the positions on each authority board (10 in the Western LHPA and eight in the Darling LHPA due to their size) will be elected positions. Another two positions will be appointed and will be directors who bring specific skills such as accounting, law or commerce complementary to the authority. The appointment process for these two positions is being finalised.

How will directors be remunerated?

The remuneration for a director on a board of an authority other than the Western or Darling authorities $10,000 per year ($15,000 for a chairman). The remuneration for a director on the Western or Darling authority boards is $6000 per year ($10,000 for a chairman). There is an additional mileage allowance for travel.

When do the elected directors take office?

Elected directors will commence in their roles on 1 July 2009.

Who is the returning officer?

Each local authority has its own returning officer. The returning officer is the general manager of the authority.

When will the next LHPA elections be held?

The next elections will be held in 2013.
